Franklin carries a famous name, and it earned it. When the town incorporated in 1778, it took the name of Benjamin Franklin. The town asked him for a bell for the meeting house steeple, and he sent books instead, "sense being preferable to sound." In 1790, town meeting voted to lend those books free to every resident, and the Franklin Public Library has been celebrated ever since as the first public library in the United States. Today it lives in the Ray Memorial building on Main Street, a short walk from the Town Common, with Franklin's original gift of books still on display.
The rest of town is close at hand: DelCarte Reservation, Chilson Beach, THE BLACK BOX and the commuter rail at Forge Park. Heather-gray fleece, printed on the chest, built for every season a Franklin winter can offer.
